The Red Badge of Courage is about a boy named Henry. He grew up on a farm in New York and joins the army. He is fighting for the Northern Army during the United States Civil War.
Henry's mom is nervous about him going to war but he thinks it will be an adventure. Henry thinks that as soon as he starts fighting he will be famous. But when the real battle comes, Henry turns and runs.
Henry fears that his dreams of being a hero are far off until he gets hit on the head by a fellow Union soldier. He got hit on the head because he tried to stop the other soldier from running away during the second battle. The other soldier got angry and hit Henry.
Maybe the blow to his head knocked some sense into him because after that he became much braver. He actually fights three more battles. During one of the battles he captures the Confederate flag.
I recommend The Red Badge of Courage to everyone ten and up. It was an interesting story. It has old language and strange metaphors so younger kids wouldn't understand it.
